SP Night Market - Birthday Edition

We have SP Night Market next Saturday 20th at Escola São Paulo, Rua Augusta 2239, from 12pm to 9pm.

If you haven't been before it's a great place to meet new friends, business contacts, do a little shopping, have your caricature done by our featured artist,  eat some great food (we have our favourite Indian food in town, plus Paella, French pastries and of course Cupcakes and free cocktail for every-adult-one courtesy of the fantastic Del Cocktail!

Our lineup for entertainment includes a networking talk by Cassia Verginia de Resende, a talk about healthy eating by Chef Tatiana Cardoso, one of the leaders in gluten-free here in São Paulo (she is really amazing!) and to top it all off a private evening gig on the rooftop by the one-and-only Camille Miller!

SP Night Connect in partnership with Ávila Steakhouse

Two great networking events going on this week. 

On Tuesday, Girls On It Launch Event in partnership with Aceleratech starts at 7pm. Tickets are available here. A bilingual panel discussion on Women and Entrepreneurship. Girls On It (GOI) is a global media platform focused on promoting, inspiring, and educating female executives and entrepreneurs in all industries. Our mission is to bring the global community of women and girls together, by highlighting and acknowledging the individuals, organizations, and companies that support them. Men are welcome too!

On Wednesday, SP Night Connect 2 is hosted by Ávila Steakhouse. You will be "connected" with the right people; whether you are there to find a job, looking for new clients, business partners, investors. This will happen over a meat and wine pairing with a presentation from the Head Chef. If you havent been to Ávila Steakhouse yet, I can't recommend it highly enough - their house cut is just incredible and you can't find it at 348. I had an emotional (crying-because-I'm-so-happy) experience when I first ate it. Incredible.

Essential reading: American Exbrat in Sao Paulo

My fellow blogger Ms Foxhole aka Born Again Brazilian has just published a book about moving to / living in Sao Paulo .. A great read for anyone moving here! Also great for those who are already living here, I laughed so much because it's all so true and every week you will have similar experiences. I was just living one particular experience (being asked for documents on a weekly basis instead of just being sent the list of required documents all at once). 

It's one thing learning about a new culture, but actually adapting to it is another. I don't know if the stress of being late for an appointment will ever go away (I absolutely hate being late), making plans last minute, doing things in not orderly fashion, or wearing a thong bikini will ever come naturally to me... 

Here's one of my favourite excerpts from the book:

"I had one of my Brazilian graduate business students explain it (process) to me this way.

Our American counterparts want us to follow a timeline of A, B, C, D and E, in that order, to get the project done. But we think B should go first, then we'll do A, then E and wrap it all up with C. Forget D all together. And the Americans get very upset.

That gave me an instant migraine." 

Thank god for caiprinhas that make those migraines go away!

A pure networking event - Wednesday 24th April, 8pm

Some people hate networking. Others love it. Even though I'm one of those who love getting out and meeting new people, I still don't like the actual term "network" - I think because traditionally, the idea of networking was going out to meet people who could benefit you. I think now networking has become a whole range of things, especially when you have just moved to a new country. It becomes just not just about business, but connecting with people who have similar ideals, lifestyles and beliefs as you. Finding friends, finding your soulmate, finding drinking buddies or if you're lucky you find one person that fits all, hah! But unless you are one of those social butterflies, with no shame or has no qualms of approaching a stranger, sober and saying hello - it can be an uncomfortable and strainful evening trying to find someone interesting to talk to.

Internation events use to be great for networking when I first arrived in town over 3 years ago. I really enjoyed their events and met some of my closest friends through the events and the online forums. Everyone went there for the same reason, to meet people for all different types of reasons. Now it's just turned into one big meat market... I can't talk to man without them assuming I'm hitting on them, or talk to another woman because I'm a woman and irrelevant in her focus for the evening. Not my cup of tea!

So the team from SPNM have come up with SP Night Connect which is pure networking. They help you meet people in a much more relaxed environment, introduce you to people and you get to have a few drinks at the same time. When you confirm your attendance, you fill out a questionnaire so they know what you are looking for and they will actively work that evening to make sure you meet people that you need to meet. It's productive, efficient and you won't leave the evening thinking - what a waste of time!

The next one is on Wednesday 24th April, hosted by PJ Clarkes in Itaim from 8pm onwards. The group will be diverse and dynamic, and if you end up sitting to someone you already know (and don't like), give one of the organisers a nudge so they can move you to another table. It costs R75 per person which includes a welcome drink, and three rounds of appetisers as you sit at each round of introduction and conversation.

SP Night Market - 5th Edition

SP Night Market is back this Wednesday 6th March! We have a fabulous new Brazilian vegetarian chef PLUS a new private chef is in town. Of course Sophie & Theo's cupcakes will also be on sale! Come and check out the market and meet some new friends.

Entry is R20 per person, includes a welcome drink from Del Cocktail and live music from Prato Principal!

SP Night Social - Wednesday 27th

Tomorrow night there is the Second Edition of SP Night Social. The first 2 hours are dedicated to women! From 8-10pm, women are invited to come and meet new friends and business acquaintances, Brasilerias and Expats. It's a great chance to meet other women here in Sao Paulo! We also have invited Priscila Gomide to showcase her beautiful new lingerie line, linha intensify.me. There is also an opportunity for us ladies to be styled by Priscila and have a photo taken, by Jana Davis Pearl! Come ready!!

Carnaval in Sao Paulo!

Who said Sao Paulo is dead in January? Just weeks away to Carnaval means that the blocos and samba school rehearsals are already in full swing and there is a host of networking events already booked in the diary.

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays are Samba School practices leading up to Carnaval. Vai Vai in Bela Vista, Perola Negra in Vila Madalena and the infamous Rosas de Ouro out on the Marginal do Tiête
Wednesday 30th January - Canadian International Society Pre-Carnaval drinks at Menys, Pinheiros (you don't have to be Canadian!), all proceeds go to a great cause
Thursday 31st January - Internations
Wednesday 6th February - SP Night Social, networking event in Vila Madalena

A group of friends are going to desfile at the SamBAdromo (heavy accent on that "BA") next Friday night with Escola Vai Vai and this is the costume, hysterical! We did it two years ago with Escola Tom Maior and it was a great experience but once is enough.... To participate with Vai Vai in this costume costs R550 (it's not much cheaper to just go and watch).
